Just got this nice email from a customer I made an FY-2 for a while ago - "Just wanted to drop you a quick line about the FY-2 you built for me. It has, without a doubt, become my "go to" fuzz pedal. Every boost I put in front of it sounds great, every modulation effect I put behind it sounds great, and it just flat sounds great directly into my tube amp. I have several other fuzz pedals, but every time I have an idea for a sound I want or if I just want to wank around, I end up reaching for the FY-2. Likewise, whatever I'm running through it--tape loops, synthesizers, my old reverb spring--the FY-2 just takes it to another dimension. Fantastic!"
Shin Ei FY-2 for Doug in the USA, with added scoop control and capacitor switching, hand painted gold hammerite finish, tagboard construction, 9v dc input.
Shin Ei Companion Fuzz FY-2 for Dave Hammer in Australia with switchable input and fuzz control capacitors going from 'stock' to more bass. Additional scoop control as well. Capable of loads more tonal variety than the original FY-2 circuit.
FY-2 replica for Dave. Has the scoop mod where you can control the amount of mid scoop on the sound, plus the fuzz control is wired differently to the original for more varied tones. Update - Dave has received his fy-2, here is what he says - "pedal is amazing! absolutely amazing, better than the original fy-2 i have" ; )
I populated 2 boards at the same time while doing Seans FY-2 so here is another with the same adjustable scoop mod, but also with a blue l.e.d. and in a hammond style enclosure.
I have always thought the FY-2 sounded good but suffers from lack of volume and a virtually useless fuzz control (Just have it on full and leave it!), so I don't make many of them unless they are requested by a customer. Sean gave me this box and wanted an FY-2 built into it, and here's the result. Features a mod adding a knob to control the amount of mid-scoop applied to the signal, the scoop can be full on or completely off, giving a massive increase in volume and extra tones.
